What’s New at MI Research
and Consulting, Inc.?
October, 2007
Hello ~
Much is happening at MI Research and Consulting! Several books, chapters and articles are being written for publication. Classes are being taught and MIDAS continues to grow in wide variety of ways!
In Video . . . Check out this new video where I briefly introduce the eight intelligences. This is a draft created by my representatives in Singapore, Developing Minds Inc., so let me know what you think: www.silverspice.com/mi
In Print . . . and forth coming!
Good news is that the Career Development Quarterly has accepted a paper that I co-authored with Darrell Luzzo, Ph.D. entitled, Multiple Intelligences and Career Exploration…..Darrell is a good from of MI and currently the president of the National Career Development Association. He works at Junior Achievement Inc.
Teachers College Press has agreed to publish a book tentatively titled, PROMISE: Multiple Intelligences and ADHD. This is now being co-authored with Vickie Proulx and Karen Case. We are collecting tales from the classroom showing how MI-inspired strategies can help ADHD students.
Network Continuum International of London, UK, has also agreed to publish my book on leadership tentatively titled: Creating ExtraOrdinary Teachers! My friend, Mike Fleetham, is working on the manuscript on to add bits to customize it for the UK reader.
I have been invited by Howard Gardner and colleagues to submit a chapter on MI assessment to a forthcoming book titled, Multiple Intelligences Around the World. In this chapter I report on the results of an international survey that I emailed to 70 MIDAS users in 23 different countries.
The C-MIDAS Chinese translation is now published by Psychological Publishing Company. You may learn more about it by contacting Eric Lin <psychoco@ms15.hinet.net>.
The MIDAS.KR Korean translation is forthcoming from the MI Institute in Seoul, Jee-Soo Kim.
In the Classroom . . . .
I recently completed a day-long workshop with teachers at the new and growing Kids Community College near Tampa, Florida. All their students will have their MIDAS Profiles to guide teachers and parents. I was impressed with the teacher’s commitment to understanding the student’s MI strengths. I also gave an hour-long presentation to an enthusiastic room full of parents who asked thoughtful and interesting questions. Find out more about this school at: www.KIDSCC.org
I look forward to watching this small school mature and grow (along with all of Florida!).
My web-based workshop at Kent State University on ExtraOrdinary Leadership continues to attract dynamic and thoughtful leaders every semester. I look forward to teaching it for under-graduates in fall of 2008 through the Honors and Experimental College.
An interesting development has been interest in using MI and MIDAS with law students.
First year students and Summer Scholars at Capital University Law School, Columbus, Ohio and the Phoenix School of Law in Arizona have all participated in my brief MI workshop and completed their MIDAS Profiles.
In the World . . .
2008 marks the 25th year since the publication of Howard Gardner’s landmark book that introduced the theory of multiple intelligences, Frames of Mind. I have organized the 25th Anniversary Commemorative Symposium on Multiple Intelligences to be held at the annual conference of AERA in NYC, March 24 – 28. Featured speakers will be Howard Gardner and Linda Darling-Hammond.
The MIDAS Profile is now being used in several exciting schools and programs including . . .
…Toronto, Canada, Millennium Skills, Patricia Gendreau
…Gasport, NY, LearnAbilities, Mindy Schreiner
….Kent State Univ., Aviation Training Program, Ed Overchuk
….United Kingdom, Frank Ward and Fiona Holland, Univ. of Derby
….South University, GA, Physicians Assts. Program, Robert Philpot
….Atlantic Baptist University, New Brunswick, CA, Bryan Taylor
Travels . . .
Nov. 9 – 17 I will be conducting MI and MIDAS workshops in Hong Kong. This trip is sponsored by Edwin Mok who is also facilitating the development of the MIDAS.HK English adaptation for use in Hong Kong. I will give a full day workshop to teachers from Marymount Secondary School and St. Mary's Church Mok Hing Yiu College.
I am also honored to be invited to speak to 60 high school principals from Shanghai and Hong Kong by Dr. Philemon Choi. Dr. Choi, Honorary General Secretary, of Breakthrough. This is an exciting program and facility for ‘at risk’ youth. www.breakthrough.org.hk
Jan. 4 – 15, 2008, I will give a series of workshops in New Delhi, India for teachers and business professionals. This trip is sponsored by Tejwant Chhatwal, President of Aishwarya Inc. I will also train his staff as MIDAS administrators so that a MIDAS.IN adaptation may be validated and brought to schools in India in the near future.
Inspiring News . . .
Finally, let me leave you with these encouraging words . . .
Mia, a guidance counselor in Ireland, writes…..
"Last
week I gave back the MIDAS results to some of our students - it was a very
positive experience for everyone - including myself. One student particular- a
traveler (who has severe dyslexia) went from teacher to teacher showing them
her profile and said that I was better than a fortune-teller! She felt that it
was exactly like her and she was uplifted. Other students are delighted with it
as well. My colleague, Della Kent, and I find the MIDAS very helpful in our
career interviews."
Cindy Baer, a high school teacher, writes….
Good
morning! Had my students do the Midas on line on Friday and just left
your web site to down load some of the pages that I use to teach with.
You'll be happy to know that my 2 students who are in Future Directions really
knew a lot and helped me to introduce the Midas along with your video to the
entire class. Susan is really doing a nice job with it in the Future
Directions class, she has developed a few new activities--check it out-drop her
a line.-Have a great week!
Cheers for 2007!
