June, 2008

Hello ~

Much is happening at MI Research and Consulting! Several books, chapters and articles are scheduled for publication. Classes are being taught and MIDAS continues to grow in wide variety of ways around the world!

In Video . . .  Check out this new video where I briefly introduce the eight intelligences. This is a draft created by my representatives in Singapore, Developing Minds Inc., so let me know what you think: www.silverspice.com/mi

In Print . . . and forth coming!

Good news is that the Career Development Quarterly has accepted a paper that I co-authored with Darrell Luzzo, Ph.D. entitled, Multiple Intelligences and Career Exploration…..Darrell is a good from of MI and currently the president of the National Career Development Association. I will present at their annual conference July 9 – 11 in Washington, DC.

Teachers College Press has agreed to publish a book tentatively titled, PROMISE: Multiple Intelligences and ADHD. This is now being co-authored with Vickie Proulx and Karen Case. We are collecting tales from the classroom showing how MI-inspired strategies can help ADHD students.

Network Continuum International of London, UK, has also agreed to publish my book co=-authored with Mike Fleetham on leadership tentatively titled: Creating ExtraOrdinary Teachers: MI in the Classroom and Beyond!   Mike at Avebury Hill

I have been invited by Howard Gardner and colleagues to submit a chapter on MI assessment to a forthcoming book titled, Multiple Intelligences Around the World. In this chapter I report on the results of an international survey that I emailed to 70 MIDAS users in 23 different countries. It is scheduled for publication in April, 2009.

The C-MIDAS Chinese translation is now published by Psychological Publishing Company. You may learn more about it by contacting Eric Lin <psychoco@ms15.hinet.net>.

The MIDAS.KR Korean translation is forthcoming from the MI Institute in Seoul, Jee-Soo Kim.

In the Classroom . . . .

I recently completed a 2 day MIDAS Certification workshop for 50 teachers at the Vocational Training Counsel in Hong Kong. This group will implement at pilot program using the MIDAS with students in this network of career development schools serving over 160,000 youth in Hong Kong.

An interesting development has been interest in using MI and MIDAS with law students.

First year students and Summer Scholars at Capital University Law School, Columbus, Ohio and the Phoenix School of Law in Arizona have all participated in my brief MI workshop and completed their MIDAS Profiles.

In the World . . .

2008 marks the 25th year since the publication of Howard Gardner’s landmark book that introduced the theory of multiple intelligences, Frames of Mind. I have commissioned a dozen notable authors and educators to contribute to a volume of essays entitled, Multiple Intelligences after 25 Years: Reflections on its Impact, Status and Future Possibilities. Contributors include Noam Chomsky, Linda Darling-Hammond, Michael Posner, Maxine Greene and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and many others. Howard Gardner will provide a Foreword and it is being considered for publication now by Teachers College Press.

I was in Ireland this spring and worked with teachers, counselors and students at Salesian College in Kildare and St. Dominic’s Secondary School in Ballyfermot. Special thanks to counselor Della Kent and her husband, David, for all her efforts to arrange these sessions and share their home during my visit.

While in Ireland I was also privileged to meet Frank McNamee and his excellent team at MultiMedia Instructional Design. We spent a few inspirational hours exploring how MI can be used to enhance web-based learning for corporate training.

Mania Ziridis-Spentzou oversaw the creation of the MIDAS.GR Greek translation and it is now being used regularly with students in her school in Athens, Greece. Principal, Babis Tsatsarelis, reports that the Profile accords well with views of parents and teachers and is of benefit to students.

Travels . . .

I gave a presentation to producers at the BBC in London on March 3rd on the Media and the Multiple Intelligences.

I was also honored to speak to 60 high school principals from Shanghai and Hong Kong sponsored by Dr. Philemon Choi. Dr. Choi, Honorary General Secretary, of Breakthrough. This is an exciting program and facility for ‘at risk’ youth. www.breakthrough.org.hk

Jan. 4 – 15, 2008, I gave a series of workshops in New Delhi, India for teachers and business professionals. This trip is sponsored by Tejwant Chhatwal, President of Aishwarya Inc. I trained his staff as MIDAS administrators and they are now working on the MIDAS.IN adaptation.

Inspiring News . . .

Finally, let me leave you with these encouraging words . . .

Mia, a guidance counselor in Ireland, writes…..
"Last week I gave back the MIDAS results to some of our students - it was a very positive experience for everyone - including myself. One student particular- a traveler (who has severe dyslexia) went from teacher to teacher showing them her profile and said that I was better than a fortune-teller! She felt that it was exactly like her and she was uplifted. Other students are delighted with it as well. My colleague, Della Kent, and I find the MIDAS very helpful in our career interviews."

Cindy Baer, a high school teacher, writes….

Good morning!  Had my students do the Midas on line on Friday and just left your web site to down load some of the pages that I use to teach with.  You'll be happy to know that my 2 students who are in Future Directions really knew a lot and helped me to introduce the Midas along with your video to the entire class.  Susan is really doing a nice job with it in the Future Directions class, she has developed a few new activities--check it out-drop her a line.-Have a great week!

Cheers for 2008!
